One of our website visitors sent us this message on 1/14/13 at 12 pm EST, alerting us to a situation on the Silver Explorer.

"There has been an incident on the Silver Sea Explorer of its way to Antarctica during an Abercrombie & Kent cruise.

At around 5:00 pm Saturday a large wave smashed into the ship, sending a surge of water into the bridge, smashing one of the big windows, injuring four members of the crew, and taking out the electronic suite on the bridge.

Very intense weather. No passengers reported to be injured."

Silver Explorer

Silversea’s purpose-built Silver Explorer expedition ship (formerly the Prince Albert II) has been designed specifically for navigating waters in some of the world’s most remote destinations, including both of earth’s polar regions. A strengthened hull with a Lloyd’s Register ice-class notation (1A) for passenger vessels enables Silver Explorer to safely push through ice floes with ease. A fleet of Zodiac boats allows Silversea Expedition guests to visit even the most off-the-beaten path locations and an expert Expedition Team provides insight and understanding to each unforgettable Silver Explorer cruise adventure.

Onboard, savor a convivial cosmopolitan ambience and many special amenities usually found only on larger ships, including a spacious library with an Internet Café, boutique shopping, a full-service spa, beauty salon, fitness center, sauna, live evening entertainment and two top-deck whirlpools. The Silver Explorer even features Connoisseur's, where guests can enjoy the finest cigars and cognacs — a diversion offered by no other expedition ship.
